The first friday of every month I host Crawdaddy's Philosophy Cafe in which a group of eclectic, inquiring minds pursues a different question. We do not approach our dialog on this question in any theoretical, academic, or analytical way. Rather, everyone brings in a real-life story which embodies the question. This month, our question was, What is Art? From each individual story a personal definition is generated.
From this set of surprisingly varied definitions, a free-flowing conversation on the evening's topic then ensues. Sometimes we arrive at some consensus or over-arching definiton of the topic. But many times we let the conversation itself serve as the result and no final definition is concluded. Such was the case on this evening's topic, "What is Art?". There is no way to portray the full color of the conversation that took place, but I can at least provide the interesting definitions of art that emerged out of the amazing personal stories of the fascinating minds who always seem to show up at Crawdaddy's Philosophy Cafe:
What is Art?
1. Something that first triggers an emotional response, that can then evoke an intellectual insight.
2. Something that transports me outside of myself, and then returns me back into myself, all the while making me feel universally connected.
3. An environment into which I enter, that brings on a very open, comfortable, primal, purely sensate feeling.
4. Something that creates a palpable, rejuvenating energy flow between the art object and me, which transcends emotion and intellect.
5. A simple feeling of awe and appreciation, a moment of connection.
6. (In the genre of music) A gateway to another place of ultimate goodness and wisdom, and it feels white in color.
7. An expressive process of self-discovery and unguarded exposure.
8. A super-connectivity among the players in a live musical performance, in which a sort of collective intelligence takes over and guides the artistic rhythm and pattern.
